“Shapes of Revolution” by Petra Metzger

Aug 1, 2012

A rebellious collection is now launched at MUUSE! Shapes of Revolution by designer Petra Metzger, is a sharp and tailored collection which plays with the sensuality of masculine clothing.

Petra recently graduated from Central Saint Martins and she has a solid design background from being trained in the craftsmanship of dressmaking, to working with Hussein Chalayan, Haider Ackermann and Peter Jensen.

We had a little chat with her to find out what inspires her as a designer and about her hopes for the future!

Welcome to MUUSE Petra! What inspired you when you created this collection?

The inspiration is the spirit of demonstration. A Muslim woman who stands up for her beliefs, her face is veiled and she is carrying a big flag over her shoulder. I immediately felt a huge amount of respect and sympathy at the same time.

What is your absolute favourite piece in the collection?

It would definitely be the coat. The precise tailoring, the weight, the details and the proportions make a person look smart no matter if you wear heels of flat shoes. It can be dressed casually of extremely smart with a pair of tight trousers and a simple top.

When did you realized you wanted work with fashion?

From a young age I loved to draw and dress dolls. So I guess it has always been a natural thing for me.

What inspires you as a designer?

It is the spirit of people that inspire me, people’s motive and the reason behind why they dress the way they do, consciously or unconsciously.

What’s your favorite fabric to work with?

It is a challenge to find the exact right fabric, which works best with the design. But I love the smell, drape and feel of a fine merino-wool gabardine. It is pure luxury!

Who is the woman you would want to dress and do you have a muse?

A strong but also sensual woman who even feels sexy in men’s clothes, someone who is confident from within. Grace Jones is a perfect muse, she is so sexy in a non-typical feminine way. She is a true character.

Who is your favorite designer of all times?

I have a great respect of Coco Chanel’s work. She challenged the perspective of femininity with her design philosophy.

If you could go back in time and experience any fashion moment, what would it be?

It would be the 1920’s. The fashion was so liberating, cool and beautiful at the same time. It must have been amazing times!

Do you have any advice that you have taken with you from fashion school?

Not to get over-educated in design and to trust my instincts! Education is a business itself!

What are your hopes for the future?

In the far future I see myself pursuing my own brand, collaborating with other creatives and hopefully loving it! But maybe life will surprise me completely and it will all come differently.

What made you decide to be part of MUUSE?

It is a great opportunity to present designs in form of a ‘mini-brand’ without a big financial risk.
