Tucked away in the campus of the Politechnico, a small group of FIT exchange students from New York soak in the materials expertise of Italy and learn a european-style approach to collection-building, while bringing a unique spirit from their home culture. For one or two years, they work with experienced adjunct faculty who give them a feel for Italian craftsmanship and production – being in the luxury apparel shopping mecca of Europe can’t help but educate the eye as well!
Perhaps that Italian/NY cultural contrast is ideal to produce designers who are eclectic and original, yet who also are good craftsmen. I was lucky to catch Lisa’s recent graduating class with their collections. Seeing the sketchbooks and hearing about the inspiration that led to their pieces – and then touching the actual finished pieces on mannequins, I was struck by the variety and the imagination.
Look for several talents emerging from FIT Milan on MUUSE in the upcoming months!
