Here at MUUSE, we are in daily contact with great design talent hoping to make their mark in the fashion world. A lot of them apply to us or are recommended to us by someone already with us at MUUSE, but we also scout the most promising talents from fashion schools allover the world – if we become aware of them.
Raising awareness of your profile as emerging fashion designer can seem a daunting task at first, but it actually just involves a little time on the internet and in your photo folders – here is the first part of our rundown of the best ways to spread the word about your designs:
1. Get a portfolio page
The most basic, yet most important part of promoting yourself. Some schools provide you with webspace and a domain to show off your designs, but any blogger, wordpress, tumblr or even facebook page will do – as long as it hosts all your collections’ visuals, collection description, a little bit about yourself, any press you have gotten so far and your CONTACT DETAILS. Great to see how great you are, but not so great if we can’t get in touch to tell you!

2. Join twitter and/or tumblr
Twitter doesn’t seem such an obvious choice because it’s so text-based, but it’s great to connect with like-minded people, post links to your portfolio page and share press features about you. Be sure to include your full name, school and link to portfolio page to your profile – you also have 160 characters to outline your inspirations.
Here at MUUSE, not all designers have a twitter account, but those who have use it to get attention of fashion media on twitter spread the word about new launches with us and other things that are going on in their designer life. Check out Lulu Liu’s twitter @LULU_LIU for an example of how to interact with twitter fashion accounts while providing interesting content for your followers. We have gathered all our tweeting designers in this twitter list
Tumblr is a supereasy way to share pictures of your designs in a visually appealing way – you can use it as a portfolio page, but also to create moodboards and get inspired by other people’s posts in your dashboard.
A great example of a designer’s tumblr is Stine Riis, she posts a mix of travel impressions, inspirations and editorials of her designs frequently: R II S
3. Contact bloggers
We recently had the lovely Mikaela from framboise fashion at our office when we did a photoshoot of Nathalie Fordeyn’s collection – it was a really nice to meet her and have coffee with her while chatting about Nathalie’s designs.
A lot of fashion bloggers are interested in upcoming design talent and novel content – you can offer them fresh images to publish and behind-the-scenes stories to tell about fashion. Giving your imagery to them is a great way to spread the word.
- send them a note that you like their blog and would like to be in it
- suggest a conversation & some behind-the-scenes photos
